The Importance of Advance Care Planning Before the Holidays

Family reviewing paperwork

Most of us keep busy during the summer months with kids out of school, vacation time, outdoor chores, and just taking it easy. While not meaning to, our aging loved ones may not be at the top of our focus. As summer fades into autumn, it's a great time to now check in on our older loved ones and ensure they stay safe, comfortable, and engaged. Today, we’re sharing essential tips and updates on the importance of Advance Care Planning before the holidays.

As the holidays approach, families often look forward to gathering around the table, reconnecting, and sharing traditions. But this season can also highlight health changes in aging loved ones that may not have been obvious from a distance. That makes autumn the perfect time to talk about advance care planning.

What is Advance Care Planning?

Advance care planning is the process of making decisions about the healthcare you would want if you became unable to speak for yourself. This includes selecting a healthcare proxy, completing documents such as advance directives, and discussing personal wishes around treatments, hospitalizations, and quality of life.

Why Before the Holidays?

  • Family is together – With more relatives in town, conversations can include those who may be part of decision-making.

  • Proactive, not reactive – It’s easier to plan calmly than during a medical crisis.

  • Peace of mind – Loved ones feel reassured knowing a plan is in place.

How a Care Manager Can Help

At Aging Care Planning Solutions, we guide families through these sensitive discussions, explain legal and medical terminology, and ensure documents are properly completed. We also help revisit plans annually, as wishes may change with a person's health status.

Takeaway: Having these conversations now is a gift to your loved ones — it prevents stress later and ensures care aligns with personal values.
